The Complete Dual Alternator Conversion Guide

Most trucks that get a dual alternator conversion did not need one. A second alternator is the right answer in exactly three situations: your sustained load exceeds what one alternator can make at working RPM, you need redundancy because the truck cannot be down, or you're feeding a genuinely large inverter or auxiliary bank. Everything below that is better solved by one high-output unit — one belt path, one charge cable, one fuse, one thing to fail. The honest starting number: if a single alternator that makes 320 to 400 amps covers your continuous draw with headroom to spare, buy that instead and stop reading.

The second thing to know before you spend money is that a dual conversion is only possible if a bracket exists for your engine. No amount of fabrication ambition changes that on a modern diesel — the accessory drive is packed, and the bracket is the whole product. As of August 2026, Mechman® makes dual brackets for exactly three engine families, and one of them is a gas engine.

Do you actually need a second alternator?

Work through this honestly before you look at parts.

You do NOT need dual alternators if:

  • Your continuous load is under roughly 300 amps. A single high-output alternator covers this with margin.
  • Your problem is voltage sag that recovers immediately after a plow lift or a liftgate cycle. That's battery capacity or cable size. Adding a second alternator will not fix it.
  • You've never actually measured your draw. Put a clamp meter on the charge wire while the truck is working and find out before you buy anything.
  • Your factory charge wiring, grounds and batteries are still stock. Fixing those is cheaper and often solves the complaint entirely.
  • You want "more power" in the abstract. An alternator only consumes engine power in proportion to the current you actually pull. Two idle alternators cost you nothing extra and do nothing extra.

You probably DO need dual alternators if:

  • Sustained draw plus 50% headroom clears what any single unit makes at your working RPM. On a diesel that idles most of the shift, that band arrives sooner than the rated figures suggest.
  • You're running a large inverter continuously — welding, refrigeration, a fully-equipped service body.
  • The truck is an ambulance, command, rescue or utility build where a dead charging system is an operational failure, not an inconvenience.
  • You already have a factory dual setup and one side is undersized. That's not a conversion at all — see below.

Two things worth saying plainly because nobody else does.

There is no Power Stroke dual alternator bracket, of any year. Not for the 7.3, not the 6.0, not the 6.4, not the 6.7. The only Ford dual bracket in the catalog is the 7.3L Godzilla, and that's the gas engine that happens to share a displacement number with the old Power Stroke. If a listing anywhere suggests otherwise, check the engine code before you order.

Triple-alternator brackets are not a Duramax option. Triples exist, they're just gas V8 applications. Nobody is running three alternators on a 6.6.

What does a dual alternator conversion actually involve?

Four jobs, in this order. None of them are optional.

1. The bracket. It bolts to existing accessory-drive or block locations and positions the second alternator so the belt path clears everything already in the bay — steering pump, A/C compressor, coolant lines, turbo plumbing. Cast is the standard part. Billet is machined from a solid block and offered in case colors; mechanically it's the same job.

2. The belt. The added alternator has to be driven. Depending on the platform this means a longer serpentine belt, a dedicated second belt, or a supplied idler. Read what your kit includes, because it varies: the Godzilla kit ships with a belt and an idler pulley, the RAM CTDDB-1318 bracket-only SKU ships with no belt at all, and the Duramax kits are sold as bracket plus alternator. Ordering the bracket and discovering on Saturday morning that you have no belt is an avoidable Saturday.

3. The charge wiring. Each alternator needs its own properly sized, individually fused output cable back to the battery. This is where most conversions go wrong.

4. The grounds. Two alternators means twice the return current through the same engine-to-frame and frame-to-body straps that were marginal to begin with.

Belt path and tensioner: what changes

Adding an alternator changes the mechanics of the accessory drive, not just the electrics.

More wrap, more tension, more load. A second alternator producing real current is real torque at the pulley. The automatic tensioner is a spring and a damper with a service life, and it was specified for the factory accessory set. On a converted truck, treat the tensioner and idlers as wear items and inspect them at every service.

Belt slip presents exactly like a failing alternator. Low voltage under load, a squeal you only hear when everything is on, output that reads fine on the bench. Pulley note that costs people money: Mechman® pulleys are 17mm bore and fit Mechman® alternators only. They are not factory replacements. Do not order one expecting it to fit a stock unit.

Alignment matters more than it did. A bracket that's slightly out of plane will throw belts and eat bearings. Check alignment across all pulleys with a straightedge before you put load on it, not after the first belt lets go.

Charge wiring, combining and fusing

The physics here is simpler than the internet makes it sound, and the mistakes are expensive.

Two alternators on one 12V bank do not need an isolator to share. Both are voltage sources regulated to roughly the same setpoint feeding a common bus. They naturally split the load, though rarely 50/50 — small differences in regulator setpoint and cable resistance mean one will usually carry more. That's normal and not a fault. Isolation only enters the picture when you're deliberately keeping a house or auxiliary bank separate from the starting bank.

Each alternator gets its own charge cable and its own fuse. Not a shared cable, not a shared fuse. Size the fuse above the alternator's rated output and below the ampacity of the cable it protects — the fuse exists to protect the wire, not the alternator. Then size the cable for that current over its actual routed length, not the straight-line distance.

Voltage drop is the real design constraint. A high-output alternator at the end of an undersized cable produces heat and a voltage difference between what it makes and what the battery sees. Computer-controlled charging is a separate problem. On 2005-and-later GM and on RAM 6.7 applications, the truck's ECU commands charging voltage. A high-output alternator raises available amperage but voltage still follows whatever the computer asks for, which can mean it never sees the setpoint you expected. On the GM side that's what the MM-VC1 RVC voltage controller ($129, for the 2005+ GM 2-pin connector) addresses; the 2014–2018 GM alternators include an RVC bypass module in the box. On RAM, fixed voltage requires ECU tuning. Know which case you're in before you blame the hardware.

Factory dual is a different job entirely

If your truck already left the factory with two alternators — many 6.0L Power Stroke™ trucks did — you are not doing a conversion. You are replacing one or both units in mounts that already exist. That's cheaper and simpler, and it's also where the most expensive ordering mistake on this page lives.

The two factory mounts are not interchangeable. They sit differently, they're plumbed differently in the harness, and the alternator that fits one may not fit the other. Specifically: the Mechman® 11627370 (370A Elite, $599) fits a single alternator mount or the LOWER dual mount — it does NOT fit the upper 157A factory unit. The practical play on a factory-dual truck is almost always: upgrade the mount you can upgrade, leave the other alone, and fix the wiring. That gets you most of the capacity gain for a fraction of the cost and complexity of anything involving a bracket.

What if there's no bracket for your truck?

Say it out loud: sometimes there isn't one, and no vendor is going to tell you that on a product page.

If you're on a 2019+ RAM 6.7, a 2023+ Duramax, a 5.9 Cummins, or any Power Stroke, there is no 12V dual bracket. Your options, in order of sanity:

  1. One larger alternator. A 400A single with strong output at idle covers more real-world duty cycles than most people expect, and it's a bolt-in.
  2. Fix the system around the alternator. Cable, grounds, batteries. On a truck with stock wiring, this is frequently the actual fix.
  3. Reduce or buffer the load. A properly sized auxiliary battery bank absorbs cyclic loads that no alternator can chase.
  4. Look at 48V if the real requirement is a lot of continuous auxiliary power rather than a bigger 12V charging system. The 48V line has the broadest diesel coverage of anything in the catalog, including Ram Cummins™ 6.7 2011–2024 — which is the only Mechman® path for those trucks and almost nobody knows it exists.

Do I need dual alternators?

Probably not. A second alternator is warranted when your sustained load plus headroom exceeds what a single unit produces at your actual working RPM, when you need redundancy because the truck cannot be down, or when you're feeding a large continuous inverter load. Below roughly 300 amps of continuous draw, one high-output alternator is simpler, cheaper and has fewer failure points. Measure your real draw with a clamp meter on the charge wire while the truck is working before buying anything — most trucks that get converted did not need it.

What does a dual alternator conversion involve?

Is there a dual alternator bracket for a 6.7 Power Stroke?

No. There is no Mechman® dual alternator bracket for any Power Stroke™ engine, of any year or displacement — not the 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 or 6.7. The only Ford dual bracket in the catalog is for the 7.3L Godzilla, which is a gas engine that shares a displacement number with the older Power Stroke diesel. For Power Stroke trucks the path is a higher-output alternator in the existing mount, and on factory-dual trucks, upgrading the mount that accepts an upgrade.

Can I add a second alternator to a truck that already has two from the factory?

That question usually means something different than it sounds. If the truck already has two alternators — as many 6.0L Power Stroke™ trucks do — you don't need a bracket; you need the correct alternator for the specific mount you're replacing, and the two mounts are not interchangeable. Only in proportion to the current you actually draw. An alternator consumes engine power based on output, not on its rating or on how many are bolted to the engine.
